The Big Dorm Move In

The day is coming. In the next month, thousands of parents will pack up cars; drive to college campuses; sit in line at the drop off location, AC running full force; shuffle bags, boxes and bins up flights of stairs, down long hallways and into too small spaces; and drop it all off with their offspring at college. They will get caught in the hustle and bustle and then it will be time to leave. In a blink.

Mothers will be crying. Dads will be jiggling the keys and the kids will be itching to start their new lives.

Maybe you are excited about this new adventure for your young adult and you. Maybe you are apprehensive. Maybe you secretly cry yourself to sleep at night because a part of your heart is leaving and things will never be the same. Maybe you’ve been counting down the days.

One thing is for sure, things are changing and no one can tell you how you will feel in the moment.

Since this can be a highly charged time for you and your student, I’ve created a list of things to do and not do at drop off. I’ve heard these tips from experts and as a fully empty nester come August 17, I know I want to make it as pleasant as possible. I’m guessing you do, too.

If you’re a seasoned college parent veteran, please leave your tips below - humor is welcomed. If you're not a parent or you're not facing this yet, call a friend who is and bring her some wine.
